Health care win for Obama...No abortion coverage in House health overhaul

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Democratic-controlled House has handed President Barack Obama a narrow first victory in the battle over health care reform. The House voted 220-215 last night in favor of landmark legislation to expand coverage to tens of millions who lack it and place tough new restrictions on the insurance industry.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Abortion coverage isn't included in the House-passed health care overhaul except in cases of rape, incest or a danger to the mother's life. It's a defeat to Liberals who wanted the decision left to the Obama administration and its successors. A bipartisan House coalition voted yesterday to amend the bill to prohibit the coverage in the government-run plan.

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland (AP) — Finance officials from rich and developing countries say they realize the global economy is still precarious and will maintain emergency support until recovery is assured. But, during a meeting in Scotland, they failed to reach a clear agreement on paying the cost of fighting climate change.

MIAMI (AP) — The National Hurricane Center says Hurricane Ida has 90 mph winds and is expected to pass between Mexico and Cuba today, with its center remaining offshore. Mexico has issued a hurricane warning for parts of the Yucatan Peninsula as Ida nears the popular resort town of Cancun.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will have nuclear standoffs with Iran and North Korea to discuss on a trip to Europe and Asia. She'll also help commemorate the 20th anniversary of the dismantling of the Berlin Wall.
