Health care passes House...Abortion restrictions imposed...Fort Hood suspect off ventilator

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Democratic-controlled House has passed historic health care legislation to provide medical coverage to millions of more Americans. The legislation, which would require large employers to cover their employees, passed on a 220-215 vote. Only one Republican voted for it. The vote clears the way for the Senate to take it up.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A bipartisan House coalition voted to sharply restrict abortion coverage in a new government-run health care plan that would compete with private insurers. The 240-194 vote cleared the way for final House passage of the sweeping legislation to remake medical care in America.

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) — The Army psychiatrist suspected in the Fort Hood shooting rampage that left 13 dead remains in intensive care at a hospital in Texas, although he's been taken off his ventilator. Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan has been described by associates as conflicted about what to tell fellow Muslim soldiers about the fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama will attend a memorial service Tuesday honoring victims of the Fort Hood shootings, an attack he described as heartbreaking and despicable. In his Saturday radio and Internet address, Obama praised those who ended the shootings, which killed 13 and wounded 30 others.

GALLUP, N.M. (AP) — A slain Catholic nun who lived and worked on the Navajo Indian reservation has been saluted for her passion in the service of others. A tearful, standing-room-only crowd attended a funeral Mass for 64-year-old Sister Marguerite Bartz Saturday. Her body was found last Sunday at her trailer home and an 18-year-old youth has been arrested.
