Posted: 11/7/2009

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) — A Muslim leader in Texas says he had a bad feeling after speaking with Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan in late summer. The co-founder of the Islamic Community of Greater Killeen says the Army psychiatrist asked him for advice on what he should tell soldiers who had concerns about fighting Muslims in Iraq and Afghanistan. Hasan is suspected of killing at least 13 people in a shooting rampage at Fort Hood Thursday.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says the training designed to keep U.S. forces safe abroad prevented further deaths and ended the rampage at Fort Hood. In his weekly address, Obama praised the soldiers and civilians who rushed to help fallen comrades and bring down the shooter "even as they bore wounds themselves."

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A man charged with killing one person and wounding five others at a Florida engineering firm where he once worked has been denied bond. A judge has ordered 40-year-old Jason Rodriguez held without bail at the Orange County Jail in Orlando. Police say Rodriguez told detectives he blamed the firm for recent trouble he had receiving unemployment benefits.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama pays a visit to Capitol Hill today, where the House is debating a health care overhaul bill. Democratic leaders are hoping to get the bill passed by the end of the day. One hurdle was cleared in late-night negotiations, when anti-abortion lawmakers won a chance to knock out language that would let federally subsidized health care plans cover abortions.

MIAMI (AP) — Tropical Storm Ida is regaining strength over the Caribbean, and warnings have been issued for parts of Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, western Cuba and Grand Cayman Island. The National Hurricane Center says the storm could hit the U.S. Gulf Coast next week. Its winds are now 60 mph.
