The family of a woman murdered and dismembered in May 2008, spoke out to her killer on Friday before learning he would be spending the rest of his life in prison.

The sentence comes after a three-week trial, when a jury found David DeJonge guilty of killing Sarah Wilson.

Police say it happened when the two were visiting DeJonge's cabin in Kalkaska County's Oliver Township.

Soon after Wilson's parents reported her missing, police found her torso near the cabin. Police say DeJonge made several attempts to cover up the murder.

Wilson's entire family spoke out Friday, and made sure DeJonge knew the pain he put them through.

"It brings me comfort to know every step of my life you'll still be rotting away in prison with the rest of the trash," said Kyle Wilson, Sarah's brother.

DeJonge avoided eye contact through it all, but occasionally showed some emotion.

At one point, Sarah's Mother, Helene, turned to DeJonge and made a passionate plea.

"You need to return Sarah's remains. She would want that. She deserves that. We deserve to know where she is," she said in tears.

Those tears continued a few moments later when DeJonge addressed the court himself.

"I miss her terribly and I'm so sorry for not being there for her and not protecting her," he said, but stopped short of apologizing for what a jury convicted him for.

DeJonge maintains his innocence.

Before issuing a mandatory life sentence, Judge Janet Allen added her thoughts.

"My only comment to you Mr. DeJonge is that the evidence was overwhelming as to your guilt in this matter," she said.

With that, officers escorted DeJonge out of the courtroom in the same shackles he had on the way in.

DeJonge still has the right to appeal.
