Unemployment passes 10 percent...Stocks slide...Fort Hood shootings

WASHINGTON (AP) — The recession may be over, but government figures show nearly 16 million people are unable to find work. The unemployment rate rose to 10.2 percent in October, the first time it's been over 10 percent since 1983. The economy shed jobs for the 22nd straight month, losing a net total of 190,000.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are tumbling in early trading on Wall Street. That's after the government reported more jobs were lost in October than expected, as the unemployment rate reached a 26-year high.

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) — Soldiers who witnessed yesterday's shooting rampage at Fort Hood say before he opened fire, the gunman shouted the Arabic phrase for "God is great." The gunfire left 13 people dead and 30 wounded, including the suspected gunman. He's identified as an Army psychiatrist trained to help soldiers in distress.

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) — The top commander at Fort Hood is crediting a civilian police officer at the base with stopping the shooting rampage that killed 13 people. Lt. Gen. Bob Cone says Sgt. Kimberly Munley and her partner responded within three minutes of reported gunfire — and that Munley shot the gunman four times despite being shot herself. She's in stable condition.

KABUL (AP) — NATO says two American service members have been killed in Afghanistan and two NATO soldiers are missing. The alliance says the Americans were killed by a roadside bomb yesterday in southern Afghanistan, while the unidentified NATO soldiers disappeared while on a routine resupply mission.
