Death toll rises in Fort Hood shooting...Democrats scramble...Obama readies pen

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) — Officials say a 13th person has died after a gunman opened fire yesterday afternoon at Texas' Fort Hood. Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, a suspect in the mass shooting that wounded 30, is on a ventilator and unconscious after being shot four times. In the early chaos of the shooting, authorities believed they had killed the shooter.

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) — As officials try to piece together what led to yesterday's shooting rampage at Texas' Fort Hood that left 13 dead, the FBI, local police and other agencies have searched the apartment of the Army psychiatrist suspected in the attack. Authorities had evacuated Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan's Killeen, Texas, apartment complex before the search. Officials haven't said what was found.

WASHINGTON (AP) — On the eve of the House's expected vote on health care overhaul legislation, Democrats are scrambling to secure enough votes to pass the $1.2 trillion measure. The bill embraces President Barack Obama's goals of extending health coverage to tens of millions of uninsured Americans and putting tough new restrictions on insurance companies.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is set to sign a bill providing tax incentives to prospective homebuyers and extending unemployment benefits to the longtime jobless. Obama is signing the $24 billion bill as the government prepares to release last month's unemployment rate, which is expected to hit 9.9 percent.

LONDON (AP) — Elton John has been released from a London hospital after being treated for flu and an E. coli bacterial infection. The singer's spokesman says the 62-year-old plans to resume his suspended tour, and will be in California for a Nov. 14 concert with Billy Joel.
