Red Wings win in SO, snap Sharks 6-game win streak

DETROIT (AP) — Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg scored in the shootout to lift the Detroit Red Wings to a 2-1 win over San Jose, snapping the Sharks' six-game winning streak.

Zetterberg also had a goal in regulation, and Chris Osgood made 33 saves for Detroit.

Logan Couture scored his first NHL goal for San Jose. Evgeni Nabokov stopped 35 shots.

HKO-ON THE BUBBLE

Swede Holmstrom 1 of many on bubble for Olympics

DETROIT (AP) — Tomas Holmstrom helped Sweden win gold in hockey at the 2006 Olympics.

The Detroit Red Wings forward says that does not guarantee he'll get a shot to help his country repeat.

Like a lot of players, Holmstrom is on the bubble and hopes a strong start this season will secure him a spot for the Vancouver Olympics.

Holmstrom has played well to improve his chances after an injury-stunted season, but says only Swedish star Nicklas Lidstrom is a lock to make the team.

Belarus is expected to be the first country to announce its men's hockey roster on Dec. 23. The United States plans to be last, unveiling its 23-man squad after the NHL's Winter Classic on New Year's Day.

Until then, several spots on each of the 12 teams are up for grabs.

E MICHIGAN-N ILLINOIS

Northern Illinois routs Eastern Michigan 50-6

DEKALB, Ill. (AP) — Tommy Davis returned the opening kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown, and Chad Spann ran for a career-high 174 yards and two scores to help Northern Illinois rout winless Eastern Michigan 50-6 on Thursday night.

The Huskies (6-3, 4-1 Mid-American) won their third straight games, scoring on five straight possessions to take a 37-6 halftime lead.

Spann had scoring runs of 65 and 79 yards in the first half, and DeMarcus Grady threw 30- and 31-yard touchdown passes to Landon Cox. Grady passed for 119 yards, ran for 104 and had a 5-yard scoring run in the third quarter.

Eastern Michigan (0-9, 0-5) twice drove inside the Northern Illinois 5 in the first quarter, but reached Huskies territory just once the rest of the way.

Dwayne Priest ran for 75 yards for the Eagles.

TIGERS-PORCELLO

RHP Porcello is Detroit Tigers rookie of the year

DETROIT (AP) — Pitcher Rick Porcello has been named the Detroit Tigers' rookie of the year.

The 20-year-old right-hander was picked Thursday by the Detroit Sports Broadcasters' Association.

Porcello led all American League rookies with 14 wins in 2009. The Morristown, N.J., native notched a 3.96 ERA and 89 strikeouts in his first season.

The team says Porcello's 14 victories are the most ever by a Tigers pitcher 20 years old or younger.

Porcello will be presented with the award before a Tigers home game next year.

The prize has been awarded by the broadcasters' association since 1969.

LIONS-INJURIES

Lions RB Smith back at practice for Seahawks game

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — Detroit Lions running back Kevin Smith returned to practice Thursday after sitting out the previous day with a shoulder injury.

Smith injured the shoulder during last Sunday's 17-10 loss to St. Louis. He worked Thursday with the first-team offense, but coach Jim Schwartz didn't indicate whether Smith would be available for Sunday's game at Seattle.

Wide receiver Calvin Johnson, who has missed Detroit's past two games with a right knee injury, also took snaps with the first-team offense. The team said he, Smith, quarterback Matthew Stafford and three other players were limited in practice.

SEAHAWKS-HASSELBECK

Hasselbeck fully participates for Seattle

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — Seattle quarterback Matt Hasselbeck has fully participated in practice a day after sitting out to give his broken ribs a rest.

Hasselbeck said after Thursday's practice that he feels similar to how he felt at this point a week ago. The Seahawks host Detroit on Sunday.

Seattle coach Jim Mora said Hasselbeck was a bit beat up after playing in all of last weekend's 38-17 loss at Dallas.

Hasselbeck was crumpled on the turf after a hit in the third quarter but finished the game.

Seneca Wallace ran the first-team offense on Wednesday, but it was Hasselbeck leading the charge on Thursday.

ROGERS-ARREST

Ex-Lion Rogers enters sobriety counseling program

NOVI, Mich. (AP) — Former Detroit Lions and Michigan State receiver Charles Rogers is re-entering a special sobriety program after pleading guilty to drunken driving.

Rogers appeared Thursday before Novi District Judge Robert Bondy and entered the sobriety court program, which involves intensive counseling and testing.

The 28-year-old Saginaw native pleaded guilty in September to operating while visibly impaired in the Detroit suburb of Novi.

His sentencing will be delayed nine months as he completes the sobriety program.

The second overall pick in the 2003 NFL draft went to jail earlier this year for a 30-day sentence instead of remaining in the program after violating probation in a domestic violence case.

Messages were left for Rogers' lawyer, Justin Barnett.

LIONS-NORTHCUTT

Woman drops lawsuit against Lions WR Northcutt

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The ex-girlfriend of Detroit Lions wide receiver Dennis Northcutt has dropped a lawsuit claiming he arranged for his cousin to beat her up at a Hollywood restaurant while she was pregnant.

Sharri Henry filed papers in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday asking that the lawsuit against Northcutt be dismissed. The papers did not reveal reasons why.

The lawsuit claimed Northcutt arranged for his cousin to hit Henry in the face and disfigure her at the Falcon Club in Hollywood on May 17, 2008, while she was four months pregnant.

She later gave birth to a boy. Northcutt has denied wrongdoing.

Northcutt joined the Lions this season after two seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars and seven with the Cleveland Browns.

DETROIT (AP) — The NFL and the Detroit Lions will honor the 50th anniversary of the founding of Motown Records with a Motown-themed halftime show during the Thanksgiving Day game against the Green Bay Packers.

Six acts on the current Universal Motown Records roster, including Kem and Shontelle, will perform classics from the Motown songbook during intermission of the Nov. 26 contest.

In addition, Jadyn Maria, another artist from the Universal Motown family, will perform the national anthem before the game.

Ohio St. to don throwback togs vs. Mich.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio State plans to play the annual Michigan game later this month in throwback uniforms paying tribute to a championship Buckeyes team from 55 years ago.

Gene Smith, Ohio State director of athletics, says the special duds are part of a test of a new Nike uniform product said to feature "cutting-edge fabrics and technology."

They'll be worn only for the Nov. 21 game against the Wolverines in Ann Arbor.

Smith says in a statement that the uniforms will salute the 1954 Buckeyes, who had a perfect season and won the Rose Bowl to take the national championship.

He says elements of the uniform are still in the works. Photos are to be unveiled Nov. 15 on the Web, and that week an actual uniform will be displayed on campus.
