Posted: 11/6/2009

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) — An Army psychiatrist is hospitalized and under military guard, accused in a shooting rampage that left 12 people dead and wounded 31 more at the Fort Hood Army post in Texas. It's the worst mass shooting ever at a military base in the United States. The gunman was, at first, reported killed. Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan was about to deploy overseas.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says his administration will make sure it gets "answers to every single question" about the mass shooting at Fort Hood, Texas, that killed 12. He calls the incident "a horrific outburst of violence." He says it's a tragedy to lose a soldier overseas, but even more horrifying to lose a soldier under fire at a base on American soil.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The vote scramble for the health care overhaul is on as President Barack Obama and House Democrats work to ease disagreements over abortion and illegal immigrants. The second-ranking Democrat in the House says lawmakers will debate and vote Saturday on the $1.2-trillion, 10-year measure, which is now supported by the American Medical Association and AARP.

LONDON (AP) — The World Health Organization says it's still seeing severe cases of swine flu in people under 65 — people who are not usually at risk during regular flu seasons. And the WHO says most of the influenza being found globally is the swine flu strain. The WHO's top flu official says up to 70 percent of the flu viruses being sampled are H1N1 in some countries.

MANAGUA, Nicaragua (AP) — Nicaraguan officials are trying to get information from a sparsely populated, jungle-covered region along the Atlantic Coast hit by Hurricane Ida. No deaths or injuries have been reported but the storm destroyed homes, damaged schools and knocked down bridges. It's now a tropical depression.
