The Michigan Nursing Scholarship was eliminated from the state budget, creating concerns for nursing students. The scholarship would have awarded $4,000 to students as long as they stayed in Michigan to work after college.
Students at Ferris State University are feeling the effects first hand. The college hopes students will find other financial resources to complete their education.
Stacey Skrysak and Photojournalist Jordan Nagel have more on how the students will be impacted.
There is a serious shortage of RNs already. The ones most seriously affected by this decision will be the patients. Instead we'll open 3 more VERY expensive medical schools to prepare physicians who will leave Michigan to go to more financially rewarding locations out of state with better staffed hospitals. Way to go State of Michigan!
do you actually know what is going on in health care?? Job cuts and other problems plaguing the system? Do some research! Most (not all) people entering nursing programs right now are single parents or people with low income or credit issues. I work in a small hospital that has been cut more than 20 full time employees and are now expected to do the work those people were doing plus the job I already do! Nurses deserve what they get paid and then some!
This is not that big of a deal!! The federal government is giving out loans like crazy..believe me I know. For as much as nurses get paid these days, paying off a loan will not be a problem.
