White House downplays results...Maine rejects same-sex marriage...Health care vote coming
Posted: 11/4/2009

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says that two governors' races decided yesterday were not referendums on President Barack Obama. Voters in Virginia and New Jersey chose the Republican candidates. White House press secretary Robert Gibbs says those results turned on "very local issues that didn't involve the president."

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Gay rights activists are vowing to continue to press the issue of same-sex marriages after Maine became the 31st state to reject it at the ballot box yesterday. With 87 percent of precincts reporting, gay-marriage foes had 53 percent of the vote in a referendum to repeal the state's law allowing same-sex marriage.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A House vote on the Democrats' 1,990-page health care reform bill could come as early as this weekend. Dozens of last-minute changes to the 10-year, $1.2 trillion bill were published late yesterday, starting a 72-hour legislative clock. There's no Republican support for the measure, so Democrats will need overwhelming support from their own caucus to get it through.

NEW YORK (AP) — A trade group says the U.S. service sector grew for a second straight month in October. The Institute for Supply Management's service index actually fell to 50.6, but any reading above 50 signals growth. On Wall Street, stocks have been rising today.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iranian security forces have been trying to break up anti-goverment protests in the streets of Tehran today. Hundreds of opposition marchers have been denouncing President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (ah-muh-DEE'-neh-zhahd) with cries of "Death to the Dictator." The protests coincide with state-sanctioned rallies marking the 30th anniversary of the takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran.
