Osgood's shutout helps Red Wings beat Bruins 2-0
DETROIT (AP) — Henrik Zetterberg and Tomas Holmstrom scored in the first period, then Chris Osgood finished with his first shutout of the season to give the Detroit Red Wings a 2-0 win over the Boston Bruins. Osgood made 29 saves Tuesday night. He also got help from the posts behind him to prevent a goal in both the first and second periods for the 50th shutout of his career. The rebuilding Red Wings are 3-0-1 in their last four games and have a point in seven of their last eight games. Tim Thomas had 24 saves for Boston, which fell under .500 with their third loss in four games. MAGIC-PISTONS Pistons' guard trio leads them over Magic AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) — Ben Gordon scored 23 points and Rodney Stuckey added 20 as the short-handed Detroit Pistons beat Orlando 85-80 on Tuesday night, handing the Magic their first loss of the season. Detroit guard Tayshaun Prince saw his streak of 496 straight games played end as he was sidelined with a back injury. Prince last missed a game on April 13, 2003 — during his rookie season — against Memphis. Prince will be sidelined for at least three games before his status is re-evaluated this weekend. Richard Hamilton (ankle) also sat out. The Pistons also got 20 from third guard Will Bynum, while Vince Carter led Orlando with 15. Dwight Howard had just eight points and five rebounds in 17 minutes before fouling out. MAGIC-HOWARD Dwight Howard leaves with shoulder injury AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) — Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard left Tuesday night's game against the Detroit Pistons with an apparent shoulder injury. Howard was driving to the basket early in the third quarter when he was fouled by Rodney Stuckey and landed hard on his right shoulder. He stayed on the floor for several moments before walking off the court in obvious pain. He stayed on the bench until the next stoppage in play, at which point he went to the Orlando locker room with a trainer. Howard missed half of the third quarter after aggravating an injury sustained Sunday in Toronto. MICHIGAN-WOODSON Woodson says it's hard to watch Michigan football ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Charles Woodson says "it's hard to watch" Michigan play football. The Green Bay Packers cornerback says he's even getting flak from a current teammate who played for the Cincinnati Bearcats. "Can you believe that?" Woodson asked reporters Tuesday during a visit to Ann Arbor. Woodson won the Heisman Trophy and led the Wolverines to the national championship in 1997. Michigan (5-4) has lost four straight Big Ten games and could turn a 4-0 start into a 5-7 flop a year after college football's winningest program lost a school-record nine games last year in Rich Rodriguez's debut season. Woodson says he and former teammate Marcus Ray exchange messages about the once-proud program, but he wouldn't share the texts. MICHIGAN ST-DANTONIO Spartans looking for bowl eligibility EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio sees plenty of reasons to get ready for Western Michigan this week. His team is either done after three games — or it will play in a fourth game, a bowl game. After being 2 seconds from a share of first place in the conference 10 days ago, the Spartans have slipped to 4-5 overall. Back-to-back losses to Iowa and Minnesota mean Michigan State must win two of its final three games simply to become bowl eligible. HOCKEY COACH-SEX Ex-high school coach to plead guilty to sex charge DETROIT (AP) A Michigan hall of fame high school hockey coach accused of sexually assaulting a teen boy says he'll plead guilty in state and federal court. The disclosure came Tuesday in Wayne County Circuit Court. Robert Bopp is accused of paying a boy for oral sex at the 53-year-old's suburban Detroit home. Grosse Pointe South High School immediately dismissed him after he was charged in June. Assistant Prosecutor Lora Weingarden told a judge Bopp will plead guilty to first-degree criminal sexual conduct after he's charged in federal court, possibly next week. The FBI says it has photos of Bopp having sex with minors. It wasn't immediately known what the federal charges will be, but Bopp says he'll plead guilty in that court, too.
