3 Hunters, Dog Survive Boat Capsizing
Posted: 11/3/2009

Three duck hunters and their dog survived a scary situation over the weekend when their boat capsized in 45 degree water.

The accident happened on Munuscong Bay in Chippewa County around 7:00pm last Friday.

The men say the weather turned as darkness fell and 4 to 6 foot waves overturned their 16 foot boat.

Quick-thinking helped them to save a cell phone and a GPS that helped them contact rescuers.

They clung to the boat while police, Coast Guard, and DNR boats searched for them.

After two hours in the cold water, they were saved.

The men say they're grateful to be alive and even more grateful for the heroic rescue efforts of many.

Waves swept one of the hunters' dog off the boat before the rescue, but they found her two days later in a marsh on the shoreline.

Erika Waddell and photojournalist Justin DePrekel have the story.
