WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans are hoping for something to crow about at the end of a light election day. Governorships in New Jersey and Virginia are up for grabs and GOP wins in either or both would wrest control from Democrats, in what some see as a very early test of President Barack Obama's political clout.
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A lot of outside money and volunteers have been thrown into a Maine ballot on same-sex marriage seen as too close to call. The measure would repeal a bill passed by the Legislature allowing same-sex marriage. The bill was signed by the governor but never took effect. KABUL (AP) — Afghanistan's victorious incumbent president is promising to root out corruption and have an inclusive government. Hamid Karzai was declared the winner of a contentious election after his main opponent pulled out of a runoff. The runoff was canceled and the Taliban is claiming victory for that. SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea's official news agency reports Pyongyang has finished reprocessing 8,000 spent nuclear fuel rods. That could give the communist nation enough plutonium to make at least one atomic bomb. North Korea has been trying to pressure the United States into direct talks. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The New York Yankees, at one point trailing 8-2, gave Philadelphia Phillies fans increased heart rates late in World Series Game 5 as they began chipping away yet again. But the Phillies avoided elimination and forced a Game 6 Wednesday in New York. They beat the Yanks 8-6. The Yanks still lead the series 3-2.
