Four shot dead...Seattle police officer slain...Sea search for survivors

MOUNT AIRY, N.C. (AP) — A manhunt is under way in North Carolina for a suspect who shot and killed four men, apparently with an assault rifle. The shooting happened today in the town of Mt. Airy at a TV store. Police say a suspect has been identified and that a warrant has been issued.

SEATTLE (AP) — One police official in Seattle calls it "an assassination." A veteran police officer was shot to death while sitting in a parked cruiser with a police trainee last night. Police say there are few clues and no suspects.

SYDNEY (AP) — Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says all efforts are being made to look for about two dozen people missing after their boat sank in the Indian Ocean far off Australia. Seventeen people were rescued by ships that responded to a distress call. There's speculation the boat may have been ferrying asylum seekers from Indonesia.

KABUL (AP) — President Hamid Karzai will apparently remain in power in Afghanistan. Karzai's only challenger, citing concerns about a corrupt election process, dropped out of a runoff today. The Obama administration says it is prepared to work with Karzai despite questions about his credibility.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea is calling again for the United States to accept its demand for direct talks on the communist regime's nuclear program. North Korea's Foreign Ministry warns it could go its own way. That's appears to be a threat to enlarge its nuclear arsenal.
