For the over 10 thousand vehicles expected to cross the Mackinac Bridge today, many are in for a pleasant surprise.
To celebrate the 52nd anniversary of the Mackinac Bridge opening to traffic, travelers don't have to pay the bridge fee.
The Mackinac Straits Health System Foundation, with the First National Bank of St. Ignace and the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island have paid the way for thousands of people crossing the bridge.
If this was orchestrated once a year by local businesses (and it wouldn't hurt the State to kick in a little bit either), this could be a real boon to the local and UP economies. It needs to be announced ahead of time - especially to the downstate urban areas. Pick a normally low traffic time of the year like this. Good business.
My wife and I took a special trip to the bridge just to take advantage of this offer and to celebrate our 29 wedding anniversary. It's been great and will take advantage of this if it happens again.
