KABUL (AP) — Afghan presidential challenger Abdullah Abdullah has withdrawn from Saturday's runoff against President Hamid Karzai, after his demands for changes in the country's election commission were turned down. The former foreign minister's move is raising fresh doubts about the government's credibility. A U.N. spokesman says "it's difficult to see how you can have a runoff with only one candidate."

JERUSALEM (AP) — The Palestinians are accusing Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton of undermining progress toward Mideast peace talks. After a meeting with Israel's prime minister last night, Clinton praised Israel for offering to curb some Jewish settlement construction and called for an unconditional resumption of talks. The Palestinians say settlement must be stopped first.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner (GYT'-nur) is acknowledging that the federal budget deficit too high. But Geithner tells NBC's "Meet the Press" that the government's priorities right now need to be economic growth and job creation.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The mayor of Philadelphia says a strike by transit workers is "off the table." Michael Nutter says negotiators will keep talking until a new contract agreement is reached. The union representing more than 5,000 bus drivers, subway and trolley operators and mechanics had threatened to walk off the job while the city is hosting the World Series.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The New York Yankees have taken a 2-to-1 lead in the World Series. They won last night's rain-delayed Game 3 in Philadelphia 8-5. The game featured the first reversal of an umpire's call on replay in World Series history. A fourth-inning hit by Alex Rodriguez was determined to be a two-run home run instead of a double.
