The public can step to the curb to support a Northern Michigan soldier killed in Afghanistan. Army Specialist Brandon Steffey was killed Sunday by a roadside bomb. He grew up in Sault Ste. Marie. His remains will arrive at the airport there Monday. The public is welcome to come out along the procession route.
Another procession will follow Wednesday's funeral that starts at noon at Sault Ste. Marie High School. Governor Granholm is also asking flags to fly at half-staff Wednesday in honor of Spc. Steffey. Monday's Procession Route: Starts at 8 a.m. Chippewa County International Airport in Kincheloe on Water Tower Drive (near the fire hall) East on Tone Road to M-129 North to Sault Ste. Marie to Ashmun Street (by about 8:30 a.m.) North to downtown Sault Ste. Marie Ends at Maple Street Wednesday's Procession Route: Starts at 11 a.m. at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home on 113 Maple Street, Sault Ste. Marie South on Ashmun Street East on Marquette Avenue Ends at Sault Area High School 12 p.m. Public Visitation at Sault Area High School 4 p.m. Funeral with full Military honors
