In an effort to balance the first quarter budget, the Cheboygan City Council voted 4-3 to lay off two city police officers.
Now, instead of eight officers patrolling the streets there will be six, starting as early as next week.
One of those officers is currently on military leave.
The police chief says they will do the best they can, but things will be scaled back at times.
Downtown business owners are split. Some are worried their store won't be as protected. Others aren't worried since the Cheboygan County Sheriff's Department and Michigan State Police Post are also in town.
The city manager says the cuts will save the city around $140,000.
9&10's Christina Vecchioni and photojournalist Aaron Smith have more details.
