CENTREVILLE, Mich. (AP) — A judge has granted a defense motion requesting a change of venue in the trial of a southern Michigan couple whose teenage daughter died in a house fire while chained to her bed.
St. Joseph County Circuit Judge Paul Stutesman granted the request Wednesday when a jury couldn't be seated.
The ruling came on the second day of jury selection, after a pool of 41 prospective jurors in the Centreville courtroom was reduced to 11.
Anthony and Marsha Springer are charged with first-degree child abuse, torture and felony murder in connection with Calista Springer's death in February 2008 at the family's home.
Her father has said she had special needs and the tethering was necessary to keep her from leaving her bedroom and the house at night.
