A kitchen fire left heavy smoke damage in a Petoskey church.

The fire happened around 7:15 a.m. at Cross Pointe Christian Fellowship.

Fire investigators think it started near a dishwasher.

The Crooked Tree Preschool and Daycare Center operates out of the lower level of the church.

The fire was contained to the kitchen and most of the damage is in the basement.

Nearly everything in the daycare center is ruined.

Preschool and daycare services are cancelled at least through Friday. Beyond that is still up in the air, but they are looking for a new place to move.

As for the sanctuary, the church is working to get it cleaned up as quickly as possible so Sunday service can go on as planned.
