WASHINGTON (AP) — A former Marine who fought in Iraq has reportedly become the first U.S. official to resign in protest of the war in Afghanistan. The Washington Post says Matthew Hoh joined the State Department after leaving the military and served in a Taliban stronghold in Afghanistan. He says the war is simply fueling the insurgency.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Top Obama administration officials head to Capitol Hill today to make their case for aggressive action on climate change. The session comes even as Senate Democrats have nearly given up the idea of passing a climate bill this year. But they're trying to show some progress ahead of global climate talks in December. UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The United Nations is apparently scaling back its expectations of reaching agreement on a new global warming treaty. The change is being blamed in part on lack of funding for developing nations and the lack of U.S. climate legislation. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is set to announce government support for projects aimed at modernizing the nation's power grid -- about $3.4 billion worth of support from the economic stimulus program. He'll also be talking up renewable energy sources during a visit to a solar power station in Florida. TOKYO (AP) — The Japanese defense ministry says a Japanese navy destroyer has collided with a commercial vessel off southern Japan, starting fires on both ships. Details of any casualties aren't yet available.
