Posted: 10/27/2009

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid gets to exercise his inner salesman as he tries to convince moderate Democrats to support the health care bill even with the public option. Reid needs every Democratic vote to turn back Republican opposition and that's not assured since a number of Democrats have reservations about the public option.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is going solar today. He'll be talking up clean energy technology during a visit to a solar power station in Florida. The Desoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center in Arcadia is about to switch on to the state's power grid. It's the second largest such solar power center in America.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Democrats have all but abandoned the idea of passing a climate bill this year, but the Obama administration, which strongly supports it, will dispatch top officials to a hearing today. Democrats still hope they can show some progress ahead of international climate talks in Denmark in December.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The head of the U.N. secretary general's Climate Support Team says he doesn't see a treaty coming out of international climate talks this December. He says reduced expectations come in part because of lack of funding for developing nations, no deal on carbon emissions and lack of U.S. climate legislation.

ORANGE PARK, Fla. (AP) — Funeral services are today for a slain north Florida girl whose body was found in a Georgia landfill. After the services at the First Baptist Church of Orange Park, mourners will release thousands of purple balloons into the air in memory of 7-year-old Somer Thompson. The burial is private.
