Option proposed...Obama won't be rushed...Bill Cosby honored

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says it's "not a silver bullet," but a government-run insurance proposal is aimed at generating competitive premiums. The public option is being cheered by liberals, but needs the support of moderates. Reid hasn't said if there are enough votes to pass the measure.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — President Barack Obama has told servicemembers that he won't send them into harm's way "unless it is absolutely necessary." Speaking at a military facility in Florida, Obama also said he won't be hurried as evaluates U.S. strategy in Afghanistan.

DENVER (AP) —Police in Denver have jailed an elementary school employee accused of taping a student's mouth and hands. An administrator is being held for investigation of child abuse and false imprisonment, both misdemeanors. School officials say the alleged conduct is inexcusable and that the district is taking action to fire the employee.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Authorities in Malaysia say 22 children on a camping trip are feared drowned after they plunged from a suspension bridge into a river. The students, all under 13, were swept away by swift currents. A survivor says the bridge swayed after some students started jumping on it.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld and Sinbad are among the comics who have turned out in Washington to honor Bill Cosby. Cosby is receiving the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. Cosby insisted that performances at the tribute be free of profanity and that the show reflect his emphasis on education.
