Miami funeral...Florida investigation...Afghan protests

MIAMI (AP) — The family and friends of a slain University of Connecticut football player have been gathering in his Miami hometown for his funeral. The UConn football team is also scheduled to attend. Jasper Howard was fatally stabbed outside a campus dance. No one has been charged in his death.

ORANGE PARK, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say they've gotten more than a thousand tips as they investigate the killing of a 7-year-old North Florida girl. Somer Thompson vanished on her walk home from school last Monday. Her body was found in a Georgia landfill two days later. A public viewing is being held today.

KABUL (AP) — Helicopter accidents in Afghanistan, including a midair collision, have killed 14 Americans, including three civilians. In the capital, Kabul, it's a second day of demonstrations by university students. They're protesting the alleged desecration of the Muslim holy book by U.S. troops. Both U.S. and Afghan authorities have denied that any desecration took place.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Afghanistan is on the White House agenda today as President Barack Obama meets with his national security team. It's the sixth full-scale Afghanistan conference in the White House Situation Room. Later, Obama travels to Florida to visit with troops at the Jacksonville Naval Air Station.

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Yankees will be trying for their 27th World Series title, when they take on the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series on Wednesday. The Yanks secured their trip to the Fall Classic by beating the Los Angeles Angels 5-2 in the American League championship last night.
