KABUL (AP) — A midair helicopter collision in southern Afghanistan has claimed the lives of four U.S. troops. The military says two others were injured. Hostile fire has been ruled out. Another chopper went down during an operation in western Afghanistan. The U.S. says military casualties were reported.
BAGHDAD (AP) — At least 147 people are dead, and more than 700 wounded, after a pair of suicide car bombings devastated the heart of Baghdad on Sunday. The bombings show that insurgents still have the ability to launch horrific attacks even as violence has dropped dramatically in Iraq. ISLAMABAD (AP) — Militants in Pakistan have killed six security force members, apparently following up on threats by the Taliban chief to spread terror strikes nationwide. The Taliban leader is demanding the army stop a major offensive against insurgents along the Afghan border in South Waziristan. UNDATED (AP) — A representative for baseball analyst Steve Phillips says the former Mets general manager is entering a treatment facility "to address his personal issues." The announcement comes just hours after Phillips was fired by ESPN for having an affair with a production assistant at the cable network. NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Yankees are going to the World Series for the 40th time. The Yanks won their first pennant in six years Sunday night, beating the Los Angeles Angels 5-2 in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series.
