BAGHDAD (AP) — At least 147 people are dead, and more than 700 wounded, after a pair of suicide car bombings devastated the heart of Baghdad on Sunday. The bombings show that insurgents still have the ability to launch horrific attacks even as violence has dropped dramatically in Iraq.

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Militants in Pakistan have killed six security force members, apparently following up on threats by the Taliban chief to spread terror strikes nationwide. The Taliban leader is demanding the army stop a major offensive against insurgents along the Afghan border in South Waziristan.
