Iraqi blasts kill 147...Madoff friend dies in Florida...Wildfire forces evacuations

BAGHDAD (AP) — A pair of suicide car bombings have killed at least 147 people and wounded hundreds more in Baghdad. Two government buildings were targeted. It shows insurgents still have the ability to launch horrific attacks. Many fear such attacks will increase as Iraq prepares for crucial January elections.

PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A former New York attorney and accountant accused of making more than $7 billion from the investment schemes of his longtime friend Bernard Madoff is dead. Police say Jeffry Picower appears to have drowned. He was found at the bottom of the pool at his home in Palm Beach, Fla.

WATSONVILLE, Calif. (AP) — California officials say a wildfire in the Santa Cruz Mountains has prompted mandatory evacuations of about 60 homes. The blaze has charred about 600 acres, and is 20 percent contained.

UNDATED (AP) — Baseball analyst Steve Phillips has been fired by ESPN less than a week after the former Mets general manager admitted having an affair with a 22-year-old production assistant. An ESPN spokesman says "his ability to be an effective representative for ESPN has been significantly and irreparably damaged."

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House has scored a stroke for gender equality in sports. President Barack Obama's chief domestic policy adviser, Melody Barnes, has become the first woman to play in the president's golf foursome. They played a round today on the Army's Fort Belvoir golf course.
