BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraq has suffered its deadliest attack in more than two years. A pair of suicide car bombings devastated the heart of Baghdad today, killing at least 147 people and wounding more than 700 others. The bombs targeted two government buildings. There've been no claims of responsibility.

No serious injuries were reported, but there were arrests. PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Police are investigating the apparent drowning death of a philanthropist accused of profiting from the investment schemes of his longtime friend Bernard Madoff. Jeffry Picower was found by his wife at the bottom of the pool at his oceanside mansion in Florida. Picower was 67. WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic officials familiar with talks on the health care insurance reform bill between Senate leaders and the White House say an employer mandate will likely be cut from the measure. But they say there would be penalties if workers need government help to buy coverage. CAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) — The average price of regular gasoline in the United States has jumped 17.8 cents over a two-week period to $2.66. That's according to the national Lundberg Survey of fuel prices released today. It's the first rise in the national retail price of gas since late July.
