Madoff friend dies...Deadly Baghdad blasts...Airline crew interviewed

PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Police in Palm Beach, Fla. are investigating the death of a longtime friend of disgraced financier Bernard Madoff. Philanthropist Jeffry Picower was accused of profiting more than $7 billion from Madoff's investment schemes. He was found at the bottom of the pool at his oceanside mansion.

BAGHDAD (AP) — President Barack Obama has called Iraq's prime minister to express his condolences following a pair of suicide car bombings in Baghdad that killed at least 147 people. The bombing of two government buildings was the country's deadliest attack in more than two years.

WATSONVILLE, Calif. (AP) — California officials say a wildfire in the Santa Cruz Mountains has prompted mandatory evacuations of about 60 homes. Officials say the blaze that started early today has burned about 600 acres. The cause has not yet been determined.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — More than 100 federal authorities are investigating an explosion and fire at a fuel depot in Puerto Rico. They're trying to find out whether someone intentionally caused the blast that forced hundreds to evacuate and spewed thick, toxic smoke across the region.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Federal investigators are interviewing the crew of the Northwest Airlines flight that overshot the Minneapolis airport by 150 miles. An airline spokesman says Northwest is cooperating and doing its own internal investigation.
