WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is condemning the suicide attacks that have left at least 136 dead in downtown Baghdad. Obama says the bombings show "the hateful and destructive agenda" of those who want to slow progress in the country. But, he says the attacks are "no match for the courage and resilience" of Iraqis.

ISLAMABAD (AP) — The Pakistani army says it's advancing deeper into a Taliban stronghold along the Afghan border. The Pakistani Taliban chief, however, says militants haven't suffered any "significant losses" in South Waziristan. He's warning of more terrorist attacks if the military doesn't stop its eight-day-old assault.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — Harvard says it's tightening security after six pathology researchers became sick in August, apparently after drinking coffee laced with a chemical preservative. The Boston Herald reports that an internal university memo says the coffee came from a machine that later tested positive for a common preservative used in lab.

WATSONVILLE, Calif. (AP) — More than 200 firefighters are trying to contain a blaze that has forced the evacuation of 85 homes in California's Santa Cruz Mountains. Fire officials say the flames have blackened about 600 acres.

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP) — A new study suggests minivans are black bear magnets in Yosemite National Park. The park scientists say bears are drawn in by the minivans because they're filled with food-spilling children and tempting snacks. Minivans represented nearly a third of the vehicles that bears got their claws into in the park, even though they made up just 7 percent of the cars that visited Yosemite.
