Baghdad attacks...Taliban threats...Public option push

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) — Iraq's president says those behind today's deadly assault against the Justice Ministry and city government offices in downtown Baghdad are working to disrupt the political process. At least 136 people were killed when two suicide car bombers struck, months before the nation's parliamentary elections are held in January.

ISLAMABAD (AP) — The leader of the Pakistani Taliban is promising more attacks across the country if the military doesn't stop its offensive into South Waziristan (vah-ZEER'-ih-stahn). The Pakistani army has claimed more ground since capturing the militant chief's hometown yesterday. Pakistani Taliban head Hakimullah Mehsud is threatening to turn Pakistan into "another Afghanistan or Iraq" unless the assault stops.

WASHINGTON (AP) — New York Sen. Chuck Schumer says a proposal for the public health insurance option is picking up wide support in the Senate. Schumer tells NBC the proposal, which would allow states to opt out of the program, is close to gaining the 60 votes needed to pass the Senate and will likely be in the overhaul legislation.

CHATHAM, N.J. (AP) — More than 150 turned out for a Sunday Mass at the New Jersey church where the Rev. Ed Hinds was stabbed to death. Police have arrested the longtime janitor and say he stabbed the Roman Catholic priest 32 times with a kitchen knife. The priest who celebrated today's Mass called Hinds' death a tragedy for the community.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — "Paranormal Activity" likely has the makers of "Saw VI" unnerved. "Paranormal Activity," which was made for a reported $15,000, took the No. 1 spot at the box office this weekend with $22 million. "Saw VI" debuted at the franchise's worst opening, with a $15 million take.
