ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan's army says the capture of the hometown of a militant leader has thrown the Pakistan Taliban into disarray. The 8-day-old air and ground offensive is pushing deeper into the South Waziristan tribal region near the Afghan border. A suicide bomber killed a police officer early Sunday on a highway that runs between Islamabad and Lahore.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has declared a national emergency, with the swine flu outbreak more prevalent than ever and vaccine production running behind. Administration officials say the declaration is pre-emptive and designed to make decisions easier when they need to be made. Officials say its not in response to any single development.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Northwest Airlines jet that flew past its scheduled destination in Minneapolis Wednesday worried authorities enough that the White House was informed. A spokesman White House says the Situation Room alerted senior officials who closely monitored the incident. Northwest Flight 118 was out of communications with air traffic controllers for over an hour. The FAA is investigating the incident.

NEW YORK (AP) — Environmental activists continue to press their concern about the effects of global warming. They held events around the world Saturday to mark the number they say the world needs to reach to prevent disastrous change: 350. That's 350 parts per million of carbon dioxide. It's around 390 now.

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The city of East Providence, R.I. has been plagued by budget problems, police and fire layoffs and teacher disputes but can now claim a world record for something a little more fun. On Friday, the city smashed the Guinness world record for longest strand of beads with a 1,349.9 foot string. The previous record was 355 feet, in the United Kingdom.
