WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has declared the swine flu outbreak a national emergency, a move that allows medical officials to bypass certain federal requirements. The flu has resulted in more than 1,000 U.S. deaths and 46 states now have widespread flu activity.
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Another strong earthquake has hit Indonesia. The U.S. Geological Survey says the second strong quake in two days had a preliminary magnitude of 7.0. There's no word yet on damage or injuries. An earthquake last month killed more than 1,000 people on western Sumatra. KABUL (AP) — NATO forces say two Americans and one service member whose nationality was withheld have been killed in Afghanistan. And officials say U.S. troops killed four civilians when they fired on a van approaching their convoy on the main highway in southern Kandahar province. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The first officer of the Northwest Airlines jet that overshot its destination by 150 miles says there was no fight in the cockpit and no one fell asleep. But Richard Cole isn't saying exactly what did happen Wednesday night. The Minneapolis Star Tribune says the incident came after the pilots had a 19-hour layover. LONDON (AP) — The ashes of the last Titanic survivor have been scattered at the English port where the ship began its ill-fated voyage in 1912. Millvina Dean was 9 weeks old when her parents took her aboard the ship. She died May 31 at age 97, and her ashes were scattered today on the water at Southampton Docks.
