Update: E.U.P. Check Scam Spreading Across Northern Michigan » View Picture » Play Video » Feedback (1)
An update today on a check scam that appears to be spreading throughout Northern Michigan.
Police say a couple passing phony checks at businesses in the eastern U.P. is also doing it below the bridge. We first reported fake checks were passed at stores in Kinross, Rudyard, Moran, and Naubinway. Now, police in Wexford County say the pair has passed checks there, and in Kalkaska, Grand Traverse and Otsego Counties. A surveillance photo of the pair is on the right. Police think they're between 25 and 35 years old. They say the couple makes the fake checks out to Matt Simmons, and always for $285.71. Police say they often buy groceries, and pocket the difference. Police want to hear from anyone who has information on the scam.
