WASHINGTON (AP) — The National Transportation Safety Board says it will probably be next week before investigators talk to the pilots whose Northwest Airlines plane flew past its destination of Minneapolis Wednesday night. With controllers unable to reach the crew, authorities on the ground were preparing for the worst, and the Air National Guard put fighter jets on alert. The cockpit voice recorder may not offer many clues. It's apparently an older model that only records the last 30 minutes.
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — An Iranian envoy now says his country will respond next week to a plan requiring Iran to send most of its uranium to Russia for further enrichment. The plan, supported by the U.S. and others, is aimed at making sure Iran doesn't use the material to make nuclear weapons. Earlier today, Iranian state TV quoted a source as saying Iran doesn't like the plan, and instead wants to buy the nuclear fuel it needs for a research reactor. WASHINGTON (AP) — The public option can't be counted out. Even though the Senate had been seen as opposed to letting the government sell health insurance in competition with private industry, the idea may be gaining some steam. Two Democratic senators say they've been told the idea is drawing interest in private talks led by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — President Barack Obama says passage of comprehensive energy legislation is key to America's future success. And he says opponents are using "cynical claims" to stop it. In a speech at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Obama said "the closer we get, the harder the opposition will fight." BRISTOL, Va. (AP) — Police in Virginia say three men were trying to be bounty hunters, and get a reward for catching a woman who had skipped bond. But they say the men nabbed the wrong woman -- and that they handcuffed and sexually assaulted her during a strip search. The three are now facing charges including abduction and sexual battery. As for the woman, she was taken to a lockup but was let go when jailers realized she wasn't the one who was wanted.
