BRATISLAVA, Slovakia (AP) — The top U.S. military commander in Afghanistan is planning to brief a meeting of NATO defense ministers Friday. Officials say Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal will give the NATO ministers his view on the war, as they focus on making Afghan security forces take responsibility for fighting the war there.
ISLAMABAD (AP) — A suicide bomber has struck near a major air force complex in northwestern Pakistan. Seven people were killed when a lone bomber on a bicycle detonated his explosives at a checkpoint on a road leading to the complex. Some foreign military experts have mentioned the site as a possible nuclear facility, but the army denies it. HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah (AP) — There are no injuries being reported at Hill Air Force Base in Utah after an F-16 pilot jettisoned two 500-pound bombs and two fuel tanks before making an emergency landing Thursday. Officials say the pilot was following proper procedures for making a safe landing. One bomb detonated and destroyed an empty tin shack in an uninhabited area of the base. WASHINGTON (AP) — A new survey suggests fewer Americans believe there is solid evidence that the Earth is getting warmer. The Pew Research Center for the People & the Press survey finds only 57 percent are convinced, compared to 77 percent in 2006. Half the respondents said they supported limits on global warming gases. ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The American League Championship Series is headed back to New York, after the Los Angeles Angels rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat the Yankees 7-6. The series is scheduled to resume with Game 6 Saturday night in the Bronx. The Yankees lead the series 3 games to 2.
