WASHINGTON (AP) — The Treasury Department is ordering companies that received billions of dollars in government bailouts to cut in half their total compensation for top executives. The Treasury official leading the pay review says average salaries for the top 25 executives are being cut 90 percent starting next month.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is welcoming the move by the Treasury Department to order salary cuts for top executives at companies that haven't paid back their bailout money. Obama says it offends Americans' values when executives give themselves "huge bonuses" while relying on the taxpayers to keep their companies afloat. BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraqi security forces have arrested 14 suspected al-Qaida members in western and northern Iraq. Officials say they include three who were formerly detained by U.S. troops there. Six men arrested in Fallujah were wanted for allegedly planning attacks in and around the city west of Baghdad. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Federal officials say a Northwest Airlines jet overflew the Minneapolis airport by 150 miles before crew members discovered their mistake. The plane landed safely yesterday evening, with 147 passengers and crew aboard. The Federal Aviation Administration says crew members told authorities they became distracted during a heated discussion over airline policy and lost track of where they were. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration is setting aside 200,000 square miles in Alaska and off its coast as "critical habitat" for polar bears. It's an action that could add restrictions to future offshore drilling for oil and gas.
