A Northern Michigan dairy farm will soon get some upgrades, courtesy of the federal government.
Rubinghs Dairyland in Ellsworth in Antrim County will get almost $25,000 to make energy efficient upgrades.
The Rubingh family has been experimenting with wind turbines and solar panels for years.
That forward thinking lead them to apply for the grant, which they'll use for equipment upgrades.
New compressors will keep milk cooler with less energy, and new pump motors will help bring electricity use and costs down.
They'll also be creating their own energy with a new biomass heater for their barn and for hot water.
9&10's Erika Waddell and photojournalist Justin Deprekel have the story.
