Prosecutors get pot orders...Runoff could be held...No arrests in stabbing

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal prosecutors are being told not to go after pot smokers or their suppliers who are complying with state laws on medical marijuana use. The policy is spelled out in a memo from the Justice Department. Prosecutors are told it's not a good use of their time to arrest people who use or provide medical marijuana in strict compliance with state law.

KABUL (AP) — The stage is set for a runoff election between Afghan President Hamid Karzai (HAH'-mihd KAR'-zeye) and his top challenger in August's presidential election. This, after a fraud panel backed by the United Nations tossed out hundreds of thousands of votes that were cast for Karzai. But it's not clear whether Afghanistan's election commission will accept the findings and announce a runoff.

BRUSSELS (AP) — The leader of the NATO alliance says its members need to quickly endorse the recommendation from the top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan that more troops be sent there. The secretary-general (Anders Fogh Rasmussen) says time is not on the side of the U.S. and its NATO allies there.

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Pirates are in action again in the ocean east of Somalia. According to the naval spokesman for the European Union's anti-piracy force, Somali pirates have seized a Chinese cargo ship with 25 people onboard. In all, nearly 150 people are currently being held hostage by Somali pirates.

STORRS, Conn. (AP) — The killer of University of Connecticut football player Jasper Howard is on the loose as police interview witnesses. A police spokesman says no arrests have been made and authorities have no suspects in the weekend stabbing. Howard and another male student were stabbed outside the school's Student Union, after a pulled fire alarm forced an evacuation during a school-sponsored dance.
