ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan's army has launched a ground offensive against insurgents in the remote mountains along the Afghan border. Officials say more than 30,000 troops are being deployed to South Waziristan (vah-ZEER'-ih-stahn), where al-Qaida and the Taliban are entrenched. Local intelligence officials say at least 11 suspected insurgents have been killed in jet bombings.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Another typhoon could be headed toward the northern Philippines. The governor of one province is ordering people to evacuate areas inundated just two weeks ago by Typhoon Parma. Nearly 300 people in Benguet (BEHN'-get) province were killed in landslides following that storm. The current typhoon has been named Lupit (loo-PEET') -- the Filipino word for cruel.

MIAMI (AP) — Hurricane Rick is already being described as "extremely dangerous" and forecasters say it could get stronger. It's swirling of Mexico's Pacific coast with winds near 135 mph, making it a Category 4 hurricane. It's moving parallel to southwestern Mexico's coast. Authorities in Acapulco are warning that heavy rains could trigger flooding and landslides.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal health officials say the new strain of swine flu is causing unprecedented illness for so early in the fall, including a worrisome number of deaths in children and teens. In the past week, 11 children have died from swine flu.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) — A Colorado couple could face more questions today about what happened when they reported their son had floated away from their house in a runaway helium balloon this week. The Larimer County Sheriff says the boy's comments about doing it "for a show" have "raised everybody's level of skepticism." But he adds the family seemed genuine during the panic.
