The man who represented northern Lower Michigan and the Upper Peninsula in Congress from 1979 to 1993 died this morning. Bob Davis died at a hospice in Arlington, Virginia, and had suffered kidney and heart failure. He was 77-years old.
Davis was born in Marquette but attended school and worked in St. Ignace. He lived in Gaylord for much of his time in Congress.
Davis also served two terms in the Michigan House and two terms in the state Senate. He was the Michigan Senate Republican leader from 1974 to 1978. In recent years, he worked as a lobbyist in the Washington, D.C., area.
Mark Ruge, who previously served as chief of staff for Davis, remembers him as "a great man who just cared very much for the people of his district." (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
