KABUL (AP) — The U.S. military says more than a dozen militants have been killed in a firefight with American and Afghan forces who stormed a mountainside compound in eastern Afghanistan. The U.S. says the compound had been used by an al-Qaida commander. No allied or civilian casualties were reported.
RAWALPINDI, Pakistan (AP) — Dozens of hostages are free after Pakistani commandos took down a group of militants who had attacked the army's headquarters in Rawalpindi. The bloody 22-hour drama ended when troops raided the compound. Four of the five hostage-takers were killed. A fifth militant was captured. The army says he was the group's leader. MOSCOW (AP) — A Russian space official says the Soyuz capsule with circus tycoon Guy Laliberte (gee lah-lee-behr-TAY'), a Russian cosmonaut and a U.S. astronaut, has landed safely in Kazakhstan. The three had left the International Space Station several hours earlier. INKOM, Idaho (AP) — A Utah teacher has been killed after she tried to grab the steering wheel of a bus that had veered off the road and rolled in Idaho. Police say the driver had a medical condition. The bus was carrying a Utah high school band. A number of students were injured and hospitalized. WRIGHTWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Officials say firefighters have gained full control of a Southern California wildfire that has blackened more than 11 square miles of brush and timber and destroyed at least five structures. Residents who fled after the Sheep Fire broke out Oct. 3 have since returned to their homes.
