Teams seek changes to provisional 2010 F1 calendar » View Picture » Play Video » Feedback (0)
SINGAPORE (AP) — The Formula One teams have expressed concern over the provisional 2010 calendar, seeking to have the date of the Turkish Grand Prix moved.
The provisional dates have the race in Turkey on May 30, just a week after the Monaco GP, putting teams on a tight schedule to move all their equipment across Europe. However, pushing the Turkish GP back by a week would also cause problems, as that would leave only one week until the Canadian Grand Prix. The Canada race is dependent upon smoothing out remaining contractual difficulties between local organizers and F1. If those negotiations founder, Turkey would likely be moved back into that June 13 date. Otherwise, a more wide-ranging calendar shake-up may be required. ___ NEWCOMER WOES: Spanish-based team Campos is already feeling the budget strain of running an F1 team, even before its debut in 2010. Campos made its F1 entry when the sport was intent on introducing a spending cap that would make competition more even. However that spending cap had to be waived in order to keep the sport's big teams from leaving the sport and prevent a breakaway series — and the Spanish team is struggling to adjust. "Next year, we calculate that teams will still be spending around €100 million," Campos team principal Adrian Campos told German magazine Auto Motor und Sport. "The abolishment of the upper spending limit threw our plan into disarray — we counted on €45 million and, suddenly, teams can spend double." ___ SPONSOR SHIFTS: The fight to attract top drivers is a constant source of headlines in Formula One, but the battle to woo sponsors away from rival teams is becoming just as intense. The 2010 newcomer Manor have already succeeded in attracting the sponsorship of conglomerate Virgin, which had been backing Brawn GP this year. Now Malaysian state-owned oil company Petronas seems likely to switch from BMW Sauber to newcomer Lotus. Petronas has been a long-term sponsor of BMW Sauber, but the team's withdrawal from the sport and doubts over the future of the Swiss-based outfit means the company could start backing the Malaysia-based Lotus instead. "We would love Petronas to sponsor us," said Lotus team principal Tony Fernandes. ___ WILL.I.AM F1 FAN: Pop superstar Will.i.am, leader of the Black Eyed Peas, was hanging around the paddock area before Sunday's Singapore Grand Prix to give encouragement to his pal Lewis Hamilton. Will.i.am, who performed Saturday in Singapore in the F1 Rocks concert series, said he's been an F1 fan "ever since I met Lewis about two years ago." Hamilton, whose girlfriend is Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls, is used to attracting celebrities at races. Beyonce Knowles, who also performed at the Singapore concert, showed up to support the McLaren driver at Saturday's qualifying. ___ Associated Press Writer Alex Kennedy contributed to this report.
