Need Food, Heating Help? DHS Wants To Help

Winter will soon be here, and the Michigan Department of Human Services expects the number of people needing help with food and heat will grow dramatically.

That's why they stopped in Traverse City today to get the word out about their services.

DHS says their new online application process is the best and fastest way to get help with food.

They also stress the importance of weatherizing homes to help homeowners be more energy efficient, saving them money for other needs.

Stimulus money will help weatherize 30,000 homes in Michigan over the next three years.

I filed for assistance online...guess what I was told...this is new and I don't know how to do it...my reply...give me your supervisor...did not get supervisor, but had a response the next day..intake worker must be quick learner!

just a note for anyone who has or will sign up for the weatherization program......It sometimes takes 6 months to a year for them to get to you; so Sign up now!!! You don't need to be broke to recieve this.

The Antrim County DHS worked well with us this past spring. Husband laid off, 3 kids and shut off notices. Our worker was great, compassionate and very helpful. I hope there are more like her out there, sorry to hear some have had a bad experience. It's hard enough to have to ask for the help.

I have two children and found myself in a very tight situation, heat turned off and a surprise bill after just paying one. I asked for help, and guess what, no one returned my phone calls, although I spoke with several people, they all actedlike they could care less.

I just had my home done by the weatherization program, and they are awesome people to work with. They really listened and cared about my concerns about my home. Get on the waiting list as quick as you can. It really helps.

we were one of the first to get our house weatherized and could tell a difference right away. i recommend anyone with a high heating bill in the winter sign up for this program. you wont regret it.
