In 2008, Tahquamenon Area Schools closed Curtis Elementary because of budget reasons, forcing students to go to school in Newberry, or other surrounding districts during the 2008-2009 school year.
In the meantime, the community formed a group called the Three Lakes Area Education Committee who worked hard to reopen the school.
After a lot of hard work and community support the school opened again today as Three Lakes Public School Academy, a charter school.
60 students, kindergarten through sixth grade are currently enrolled.
9&10's Christina Vecchioni and photojournalist Aaron Smith have more details from the first day of school.
