Van Jones is an administration official specializing in environmentally friendly "green jobs." Jones apologized after being linked to efforts suggesting a governmental role in 9/11 and to derogatory comments about the GOP.

TOWNSEND, Ga. (AP) — Relatives of Guy Heinze (hynz) Jr. are defending the Georgia man charged with eight slayings, including his father and six other members of his family. William Heinze says his grandson "loved his dad" and was "devastated" when he came upon the crime scene. Seven of the victims were buried on Saturday.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The investigation continues into the origin of the huge wildfire in Los Angeles County as fire crews report major progress on the nearly 242-square-mile blaze. Two firefighters died and at least 76 homes were destroyed. Arson investigators are analyzing clues found on a charred hillside and homicide detectives are trying to find the perpetrator.

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (AP) — The Mexican army says it has arrested a drug suspect linked to a 2006 border incursion by armed traffickers in Texas and the killing of anti-crime activist Benjamin LeBaron in July. The army says Jose Rodolfo Escajeda has been turned over to Mexican prosecutors, but it didn't say whether he would be extradited to the U.S.

TEMPLETON, Calif. (AP) — Scores of people say they felt a small earthquake that shook California's central coast, but there are no reports of any damage or injuries. The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude-4.0 quake struck Saturday evening and was centered five miles west of the town of Templeton, at a depth of about three miles.
