Obama official resigns...Progress in SoCal firefight...Victims of Ga. killings buried

WASHINGTON (AP) — An Obama administration official specializing in environmentally friendly "green jobs" is out. The White House says Van Jones has resigned amid controversy over past inflammatory statements. Jones is linked to efforts suggesting a government role in the 2001 terror attacks and to derogatory comments about Republicans. He apologized on Thursday.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Firefighters in Southern California continue to make progress against the huge Station Fire. The western stretch of the blaze north of Los Angeles is under control and the blaze is no longer threatening homes in the region. Now, crews are working to slow the flames' eastern march into the San Gabriel Wilderness. The fire is 49 percent contained.

TOWNSEND, Ga. (AP) — Relatives of the Georgia man charged with killing eight people are defending him. His 16-year-old brother says Guy Heinze (hynz) Jr. "has a conscience" and would not have killed his father and seven other people. Seven of the victims were buried Saturday.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Two astronauts have completed their final spacewalk of their mission. They carried out cable and antenna work during the seven-hour outing at the space station. The spacewalkers did have trouble with one connector. That job will be completed on a future mission. Discovery is expected back in Florida on Thursday.

BOGOTA (AP) — A grenade exploded in a crowd celebrating a national soccer team win in Medellin, Colombia, on Saturday night. Police say one person was killed and at least 30 were wounded, three of them seriously. The cause of explosion isn't known, but police think it may have been an accident.
