Passenger Calls 911 From Cell Phone Before Plane Makes Emergency Landing In Pellston » View Picture » Play Video » Feedback (0)
Shortly after taking off from Harbor Springs, an five-seat Piper Malibu airplane filled with three people lost power, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing at Pellston Regional Airport.
The plane did not have any working instruments, radio or landing gear. A passenger on board used her cell phone to call 911. Central Dispatch transferred the woman to responders at the airport who helped keep them calm as the plane circled the airport before landing. As the plane circled, emergency crews at the airport prepared for the worst near the runway. When the plane finally came down in a grassy area, it hit the field before coming to a stop just a few hundred yards away. The pilot from Illinois and the two passengers from downstate Michigan all walked away unharmed. The plane has only minor damage to the bottom and propeller. 9&10's Christina Vecchioni and photojournalist Aaron Smith have more details, including parts of the 911 call made from the plane.
