Transformer Move Clogs Traffic, Travels less than 10 MPH » View Picture » Play Video » Feedback (0)
If you got stuck in traffic Tuesday in Traverse City, you weren't the only one. The jam was caused by an electrical transformer on a road trip.
The 250-thousand pound transformer is the main piece to the electrical substation under construction in Elmwood Township. Tuesday morning, Cherryland Electric loaded the transformer on a truck in Grawn and set it all the way across town to the construction site on M-72 in Elmwood Township. The 13-mile journey took about three hours of stop and go driving, traveling at an average speed of less than 10 miles per hour. "Obviously with a truck load of this size, the traffic flow was drastically affected," says Frank Siepker, Engineering and Operations Manager of Cherryland Electric. The power company spent several months getting permits, paperwork and clearance for the massive move. 9&10's Ryan Raiche and Photojournalist Jeremy Erickson have more.
