Bomb scare has ripple effect...Americans missing...South shakes

NEW YORK (AP) — A bomb scare at a New York airport is sending ripples around the country. Airlines have been forced to adjust their schedules after the central terminal at LaGuardia Airport was evacuated for several hours this morning. Police say they've arrested a New York man who had a fake bomb in a bag.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States is asking Switzerland to help it find out what's going on with three American citizens reportedly being held in Iran. Iranian state TV says Tehran detained the Americans yesterday after they crossed the border from northern Iraq. The Swiss represent American interests in Iran.

KABUL (AP) — Roadside bombs have claimed the lives of three U.S. troops in Afghanistan. The military says today's blasts struck a patrol in the southern province of Kandahar, where U.S. troops are battling resurgent Taliban forces. A French soldier was also killed today in a gunbattle north of Kabul.

DUCKTOWN, Tenn. (AP) — A minor earthquake has rattled the mountainous area of southeastern Tennessee, western North Carolina and northern Georgia. The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake measured 3.2 with an epicenter about 55 miles east of Chattanooga, Tenn. No damage or injuries are reported.

ROME (AP) — Michael Phelps has become the first swimmer to break 50 seconds in the 100-meter butterfly. He did it today at the world championships by beating the same Serbian swimmer he edged out in last year's Olympics. Both men finished under 50 seconds -- Phelps in 49.82 for gold and Milorad Cavic (MEE'-loh-rahd KAH'-vihch) in 49.95 for silver.
