Mackinac County Hit and Run Suspect Faces Murder Charges
Posted: 7/27/2009

Police say Dustan Bowen of Sanford caused a hit and run crash in Mackinac County's Newton Township, leaving two dead and others hurt.

It happened around 10:00 Saturday night on South Gould City Road.

According to police, a group of 23 from a family reunion were walking along the side of the road when Bowen's SUV crossed the center line, hitting ten people and two dogs.

Two women died, along with the two dogs. Seven others went to the hospital and two are still being treated for their injuries.

After the crash, police say Bowen took off.

They found him around 6:00 Sunday morning near the Western Lime Quarry in Schoolcraft Township. Shortly after, they found his vehicle hidden in some nearby woods.

He is facing 8 felony counts, along with 1 misdemeanor.

The charges include:

2 Counts: Homicide - Murder - Second Degree

2 Counts: Failure to stop at scene of accident - when at fault - resulting in death

2 Counts: Failure to stop at scene of accident resulting in serious impairment or death

2 Counts: Animals - Killing/Torturing

1 Count: Operating - Violation of License Restrictions

The prosecutor says this is the second time Bowen's broken the law in a vehicle, which makes him a habitual offender.

If found guilty, he could spend the rest of his life in jail.
